I’m using the Lee REAL .575” in a ClayBuster wad over LongShot. 17.5gr gets 1,250fps and 19.4 yields 1,425fps. The latter shoots POI/POA when sighted for either the Remington AeroTips, Hornady SST, or Federal 3/4oz Economy Sabot Slug.
Accuracy approaches that of the Federal load. This is from my Savage M220 rifled barrel bol5 action.
From a smooth bore, it’s disappointing. Key holes…..
From my smooth bore, I substitute the Lyman Sabot 20ga slug. (Looks like an air rifle pellet).
Same load (Win 209 primers). Shoots “ok” to 50+ yds. Going transonic it does weird things. It’s better than the LEE REAL from a smooth bore.
Not previously mentioned is USE A 28ga CARD WAD UNDER THE SLUGS if using a shot cup wad.
This prevents the wad fingers getting pinched and shearing off the body of the wad. It also helps to fill the sabot wad hollow base with RTV silicone sealer. This helps prevent the slugs from being stuck on the wad disrupting the release process and flight. Trimming the wad to the length of the bore riding surface is helpful too,
I use a folded crimp. AA hulls preferred.
Unless you’re a dedicated caster, I’d recommend just buying a quantity of Federal Power Ball slugs and a rifled choke tube.
That and a good inexpensive laser range finder…
