I have found that for larger buckshot (#1 & 00) a 2 pellet stack with in a plastic wad with a little buffer far outperforms any multiple stack without a wad. The only way to find out is testing patterns yourself. If you care to look further here are a couple of threads…https://castboolits.gunloads.com/sho...ink&highlight=

Suggested choke constriction, with a two pellet per layer stack, is actual pellet diameter x 2 and wad petal thickness X 2. Add the resulting two figures together for a choke constriction that will consolidate rather than compress the pellets.

doesn't a 12 gauge factory buck shot load come in 9 pellets and or 12 pellets? I can't remember?
I have used both of those from the factory.
