Tatume, is your 9.3 a Ruger? If so, how do you like it?

I don't know when they became available but 9.3 gas checks have been available for at least 5 years that I know of....and darn my hide, I can't think of who has them....something "Outdoors"?. They come in aluminum and gilding metal, I guess. They look like Hornady's. I bought some aluminum simply because I'd never tried them. Well, I have now and I won't be buying any more. They work fine but I don't think their initial fit is as good as gilding material.

Edit: HA!!! I remembered. "Sage Outdoors"....I think.

They are Sage Outdoors gas checks. NOE and White label lube carry them.

I completely forgot about this thread so, apologies for not responding.

To date, no further progress has happened regarding cast bullets and my merkel double rifle. Life and work got in the way.

Now that I am very close to retirement, and with the very recent loss of my favorite hunting/best pal dog, it’s time to pick up where we left off.

In the meantime, have also acquired a ruger #1 in 9.3x74r which I hope to set up for cast bullet shooting.

I’m thinking a weight of 250 to 270 grains. If I take it hunting, that should give me enough foot pounds for deer and moose to 200 yards.

Your thoughts on this please.

First off welcome back.

If I were to hunt with a 9.3 and cast bullets I would prefer a bullet with a large meplat as I've seen what a blunt nose cast bullet can do to big animals. I would also look for the softest alloy that didn't lead at the highest speed I could get with accuracy and safely. As for your Merkel most double rifles can shoot cast bullets with some degree of satisfaction. The bigger the caliber the easier it seems to be to get them to shoot decent groups and regulate. That said I still haven't gotten my Chapuis 9.3x74 double to shoot cast to my satisfaction. The individual barrels shoot OK but so far I haven't found a load that regulates.

Holy crap good cheer, that is the bullet design I’m looking for. I live in Alberta, Canada. If I send you money, can you ship 100 of those for me to try out? I do not need them lubed and sized as I would do that myself.

What size gas check do you use? I see the bullet is .369 in diameter. I am assuming you use this bullet cast and lubed to your needed diameter.

What rifle are you shooting this from?

To update: I am now semi retired: taking the summer off.
I use magma equipment for making bullets. They have shut down and were bought and moved to Australia. I will order the mold blank and have them shipped so I can get a mold.

There will be some serious testing going on in the coming weeks. I will keep you updated.

I know what you mean about life. The weather here is currently minus 20-30 Celsius. No desire to go outside and shoot or cast.

Yuck. It's suddenly Fahrenheit 50ish around here. Time for casting, dressing grape vines, taking the cats out back for tree climbs. Which reminds me, there's a new smoker and a new composter I have to build and to get out of the garage.
Wanted to go test some 516 grainers in the .46 bore today but there's life again needing the guest room closet interior to be rebuilt. Oh well.

Ok, back again with a little more info.

I took the plunge the other day and ordered a mold from accurate molds. It is the 37-275B.

I’ve decided to go with powder coating, to start with. As I have three rifles in 9.3, I thought powder coating might be more efficient.

But, the bonus is, I can also take this .367 as cast diameter bullet and paper patch for use in my 375 HH.

I will keep you informed. Mold should arrive in mid June.

Hello, Just saw this thread. I also am wanting to shoot cast PP bullets out of my 140 9.3x74r and my Sabbatti 450-400 3". The reason is mostly the bullets are to expensive to shoot as much as I would like to. Unforunately my merkel doesn't have a regulating screw, just the wedge. So, will be watching this one closely.
