Ok, the brass is going to work but the 80 gr bullets I have won't, they tumbled. I have more bullets on the way.

I shot five rounds with 80gr. bullets, 1100 fps, three of them left keyholes in the target.

Very intersting discussion. Thanks all for sharing. Is the 25 Stevens mentioned a Short or Long?

There is no short or long. Its just .25 Stevens, except in the case of Remington rifles. Remington did not want the Stevens name on their barrels, so they called it the 25-10 RF. Not to be confused with other 25s like the .25-20 single shot, .25-21 and the .25-25.

Cartridges of the World lists a 25 Stevens and a 25 Stevens short in the rimfire section. I take it this is the same as 25-10?

The .25-10 is the same as .25 Stevens. I've never seen a short version, but I just learned something new.

Thanks. These old cartridges are very interesting to me.

So the 25-10 Halsted is a rimfire, 25 Stevens is centerfire? But cartridges of the world 5th edition (and 14th) lists 25 Stevens as a rimfire and doesn't list a centerfire version.

Where can I find information about 25-10 Halsted and 25 Stevens centerfire?

Is the 25-10 Halsted the same as the 25 Stevens rimfire? Just different name?

Bazoo, if you go back in this thread a bit I posted a picture of .22 lr, .22 wrf, .25 stevens, 25-10 halsted and .25 stevens short. all side by side. 25-10 Halsted is the centerfire version of .25 Stevens.

I want to go that route too, just ream out the chamber for 22 hornet, fire form the brass to my reamed chamber!
Shorten the brass, adjust the loads to the gun.

I have a very minty Ballard #3 that was sent to Stevens to be rebored and rifled by Stevens to the .25 Stevens Long. It's marked under the forearm on the barrel as, "Rebored and Rifled by J. Stevens Arms Co. 25 Cal."
I got my hands on 14 boxes of newer Cannuck ammo long ago and shot up half of that and the Ballard is super accurate. Being so minty, and the Stevens markings I've never wanted to convert the breech block, or chamber and ruin it. But I did experiment with using Ramset charges and making up a breech seating tool to breech seat bullets. The lightest yellow charges worked well, and the Ramset blanks are the perfect velocity for weaker action rifles in .25RF. No need to modify the rifle, or action, and no reloading needed. Just make a tool to seat bullets and buy the Ramset charges.

I've had John Taylor convert several #2 RRB rimfire blocks to centerfire.
