Fillers for paper patched 45-70 gov

Hello this is my first post here and I was curious on proper fillers to use in smokeless PP bullets. I shoot a 45-70. (Load at the bottom if curious) I'm a rookie when it comes to this. I worried that my lube (50% beeswax/ 50% Vaseline) contaminat my powder when I tilt the cartridge so I was curious on the best fillers but I know some fillers to use. I know it has to be non-compressible. Like cream of white or cornmeal. The one I saw by Iraqveteran8888 was polyester stuffing In bp load and was curious if i could use it in my smokeless powder load.

I would love to get advice on this l. I look forward to hearing from you guys.

If you are paper patching what is the purpose for the lube? , and be very carful with filler and some powders that will ring a chamber. I use several powder smokeless and don't use a filler or lube in the grease grooves .

i lube the paper after its on the bullet. In the beginning i read Paul A. Mathew book "A Paper Jacket" in that book he mentions he lubes his paper with (55% beeswax and 45% Vaseline) so I'm following suit and all the people I've read on lube there paper in some way.

For smokeless, lube isn’t needed. As the title of Mathew book says, it’s a paper jacket. You don’t lube jacketed bullets. Having said that, I wet my fingers with Alox and apply it to the exposed portion of the patch to protect it from rain. What rifle are you loading for?

I wipe a very light coat of Jo Joba oil on the patch then wipe of with a cleaning patch just a light sheen to the paper. Lube on the patch can attract dirt and dust turning the patch into a lap.

What powder are you using that needs a filler? For PP 45-70 smokeless loads I usually use a powder that fills the case like 3031 or 4895 so no filler needed. Even something faster like 4198 will leave some space but works just fine. I just use jacketed bullet load data. Other calibers, various small bores, are more difficult to get to work with PP and demand a filler but 45-70 is usually really easy to get to work.

One of the old buffalo hunters (might have been Frank Mayer) stated he would roll the dry patched bullets in a soft doeskin rag that had been coated with graphite, which imparted a small amount onto the patches. I have done the same but suspect it may only help with waterproofing - although there may be some lubrication benefit. I've also tried jojoba, but could not see much difference down range.

Yep, no filler needed. Cream 'O' Wheat if you must but you won't see much difference other than a bit more pressure.

As long as you balanced the amount of 4198 to account for the added energy of the filler. Back off the main charge maybe 5 grains and fill the rest, test fire one to make sure you're not seeing any kind of overpressure. At least that's what I'd do.

Totally depends on what you are trying to achieve. Dacron or backer rod is next to useless to keep gas from tearing up your paper patch. But it is good for keeping the powder next to the primer to promote good ignition.

In my 458Lott using 4198 I used 1/2" backer rod and a card wad under the boolit.
No issues whatsoever.

Admitting my lack of knowledge, what is backer rod? GF
