Resource Recommendations for BP Cartridge Reloading?

2 years ago I was bequeathed a Pedersoli Rolling Block Long Range Creedmoor 30". To date I have only fired purchased, jacketed ammo. I now wish to begin casting and reloading for it, and w paper patched boolits. I’ve spent some hours scouring the sections this knowledge can be found here on the forum and find that my head is swimming. Reloaded metallic smokeless ammo for 40+ years, cast for my flintlocks for more than 20: but this appears to be a different animal altogether. Card wads, wool wads compression, load to groove (or greater), load to lands, and so forth..

Any books, reference articles you have personally used and found helpful that lays out and explains the process would be greatly appreciated. Reading so many posts, with its dizzying new nomenclature and acronyms has left this old bird scratching what’s left of the follicles left on my head.

    Cheers!

I tried paper patching for my Shiloh Sharps in .40-90SBN, not remembering that when I ordered the rifle, I had been asked whether I wanted a paper patch or "grease groove chamber"... Since my original intent for the rifle was mainly hunting, and not being familiar with paper patching; only planning on the occasional match, I'd gone with the grease groove, or shorter leade chamber. Which, in this case, is much too short to allow paper patching. You might want to do a chamber cast and see if you have enough leade to accommodate a patched bullet.

PIWO. The book by Randolph Wright is the only book on paper patching worth having.

Griff. Shiloh’s standard chamber works very well for shooting paper patched bullets. But the .40-2 5/8 SBN (40-90)is a difficult cartridge to shoot in a hunting load. Get Randolph Wrights book on paper patching to get started. You have a misconception about how a Sharps paper patch bullet fits in the chamber. I can help you with your loads but let’s not hijack this thread. The bullets, wads, and lube are different than what a target shooter will have on his bench.
