I picked up these two buckets of wheel weights for $10 today.

Found on FB marketplace, there are some deals still out there




Only complaint is that he filled the buckets too full, those SOBs are heavy!

That looks exactly like what I shovel out of the bin down at my local metal recycler. Air stems, pressure sensors, and all. Price is probably right there too.

I get about 80% lead, and the rest steel, steel/plastic, and zinc. I'll get maybe 3 pounds of lead stick-on for each 100 pound trip.

I dump it all out on a large board on my tailgate and sort every bit of steel out first with a magnet. Then I sort what is obviously zinc, which are the huge thick zinc ones and easy to spot.

Then I run what's left through my bolt cutter tool because my welder life eyes are too tired to look for all the markings, and my carpal tunnel is too bad to squeeze on em all with a side cutter. The bolt cutter is a 100% positive yes or no, lead or not.

Gone are the days of nice clean old style weights with anything else in the pile very rare.

BE CAREFUL of razor blades too!! Apparently auto mechanics think the junk tire weight bucket is where junk razor blades go. I find one or two in every bucket. Wear gloves!!

I found a good 5/16 MAC punch in a bucket of weights. Right now I have the end tapered to open up some old style 30 caliber gas checks I have. Chucked in the drill press to use as an arbor press, it makes quick work of it.

I started buying scrap wheel weights in the late 1970's and the least I ever paid a pound was 25cent. I never EVER saw free WW's in my life. You got a great deal.
