PP the Lyman 311467 for the .30-06 and 7.92 x 57

I purchased this mould from a member here and cast about 180 good boolits after it warmed up using COWW alloy. The as-cast diameter is running .313” which allows it to be used in the Zastava 7.92 x 57 which has a land diameter of .312”. I patched up 50 using notebook paper which measures .0032” dry. After patching the cores and allowing them to dry, I measured the patched diameter to be .322 to .323”, which was a couple of thousands smaller than I was hoping for. Could someone recommend a patching paper which would allow a .326” - .327” patched diameter?

Regarding the .30-06 and using this design I have a .285” push thru die which I opened up to .303” by mistake ( too much enthusiasm) as I was trying to obtain a .301” diameter. I believe my land diameter on this M 700 is very close to .301” and I patched up 10 cores just to see if they will group. Is the .002” over land diameter to much to expect any accuracy from these boolits? They haven’t dried yet, so I don’t know the patched diameter of these PP cores.

I have read some folks going a lot more than that over land diameter

I'm thinking here about something like the 8mm mauser, where the land diameter is .311 (.312 in your case), groove is .323. and using a sized .316, with 2 thin wraps to .324-.325

.005 over seems to do no harm in this case, can't see why it would in your 30-06? The only concern is if you size them down to fit, you may size the core a bit... but you do have a bit of room there

as for paper, your getting almost 0.010 increase. the only thing I can think of is plain photocopy paper... or simply go to an art store, and buy some small pads of different weight paper and try them

but first, have you shot your .322-.323 boolits yet? they may work just fine as is.

Harrison stated that the mold they ordered from Lyman cast 0.303" instead of 0.301"
It was found to be a good mistake in that with a slightly worn or worn throat the 0.303" core worked better in the 30-06 rifle.

A alloy of around 12 bhn may work better for fps up to2600fps.

I haven’t gone that fast in the 30-30 but a little tin doesn’t hurt or so it seams.

I don't worry about the lands ,i patch to the throat diameter several of my 30-06s have a throat that measures. 311 so that becomes my target sizing, i use onion paper or bible paper two wraps which is gives you
.006 on your core,

For my .30 rifles, I size the core to .303 and patch 2 wraps of .002 tracing paper. Use these bullets mostly in .30-30 and .30-40 Krag and have gotten some impressive groups for lever action rifles. Also use in .300 Sav and .30-06 with satisfaction.

Thanks for the replies! I’m going to try the boolits in the 8 mm and see if they give any accuracy. I realize I’ll need to add some lead to the alloy for hunting use.
I did find some .004” thick printer paper that I will try in the Mauser if the .322-.323” patched cores don’t work out.
Glad to hear the .303” cores shouldn’t be to large for the .30-06; I’ll patch up some more of these with the .004” paper and see which size seems to better fit the throat of the Remington. I believe it was Nobade who said you need to fill the throat as closely as you can to prevent gas from getting past the patch. I’ve got some cerrosafe, I’ll use it to find the throat diameters and try to patch up to fill them. Thanks again for your help!

I made a cast of my 8 mms neck/ throat/ bore and found I have a .327” throat. So I cast some more 311467s and wrapped them with a patch 2.95” long (.314” x pi x 3) to get the patch up to throat diameter. I will try to get the case necks to hold the resulting .328” patched core.
