Aluminum Foil for Enlarging.452 Jacket Bullets to.458?

A coworker got a modern Springfield Trapdoor for a birthday present and is planning to use 325 gr bullets, they are anywhere from 60 cents to a $1.25 each.
I was wondering if wrapping aluminum foil around .452 pistol bullets to increase the diameter to .458 similar to paper patching would work?

Don't do that. Not only will it not shoot well but aluminum oxide run through a barrel really fast with lots of pressure behind it is not beneficial to the barrel. Why not just use paper? Paper patched pistol bullets work great in the 45-70. Since it's a Trapdoor, shoot for about .463" or so after wrapping.

Aluminum foil will be very hard to get to wrap flat and grip the bullet well.
Aluminum is abrasive in itself.this and the sharp edges from cutting will be hard on the old softer barrels.
There also may be an issue with consistent release of the wrap from the bullet.

Most pistol bullets may be cast of an allow to hard for the bullt to seal the bore good.

Bullet dia + (4 times the paper thickness) ( this is 2 wraps of paper) will give an idea where you will be at. >003 thick pare 2 wraps on a .452 dia bullet will put you just over 463.

Why would it be any worse than aluminum gas checks?

Way more bearing surface. Like an aluminum jacketed bullet.

Isn't this a cast bullets forum? At current prices the lead for a 325 Gr bullet is about a dime.
    Currently casting and loading: .32 S&W Long, .38 Special, 9X19, .357 Magnum, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, 10mm, 44 Special 44 Magnum. .223, 7.62x39, 7.62 x 54R, .30-06, 45-70, .32, .36, .44. .45. .50. .54. .58 and .60 round ball and various minies. And .375 heel crimped conical for those .36 conversions . KB6MRP on Discord

Are we about to have the teflon tape discussion, again?
I agree with 2TM101, cast some bullets.

Ha! It does come around now and then.
Yes, for the price of not many of those bullets you could buy a Lee 405 HB made just for the Trapdoor.

Just out of curiosity, if swaging will the 45 ACP case stretch enough to make this bullet.

A 45 acp case would need to shrink to make this bullet at .457-458 swaging. A 45 acp case is probably around .475 at the base of the case. With the taper in the case walls it would be a heavy jacket when swaged down to .458 or so.

Rooster Jacket works pretty good if you can find it. You can double dip it, too.

Seems like a bump die would be easy enough to make, just for plinking/familiarization; whack a few up to size and if the owner decides he likes it, then he can start looking at molds.
I've patched .35 caliber boolits up with paper a few years ago (it was not the same thing as paper-patching), if I had to get the Springfield to shoot and pistol bolts were all I had, paper might be one way to get it done
Warning: I know Judo. If you force me to prove it I'll shoot you.
