    311284 cast bullets in 30/30?

This bullet works very well in 308 and 30/06 so i want to try it in my browning single shot 30/30.I really like imr 4227 but have almost all powders to try so please any load data is appreciated.

Before you do anything else make up a dummy cartridge and make sure that it's going to chamber. The 311284 is a great bullet, but it's longer than the ones that are usually used in the 30-30. Because your using a single shot this bullet might work fine, but experience dictates that if you load up 100 finished cartridges without checking first there's a 99% chance that they won't chamber.

Here's some load data for that bullet in the 30-30: https://castboolits.gunloads.com/sho...l-s-30-30-load

If you check old "Fouling Shot" issues Frank Marshall loaded that bullet in a bolt action Savage 30-30 . He included powder data and loading techniques for that rifle too .

You did not specify anything as far as type of load. Just to give you a comparison for what powders are likely to be able to achieve for velocity, I ran a Quickload table. With the application being for a single shot, I set the COAL a little longer than the SAAMI spec. This is not load data, but the predictions might help you select a powder that is a good choice for what you want to do.

    Code:
    Cartridge : .30-30 Win. (SAAMI) Barrel Length : 18.0 inch = 457.2 mm
    Bullet : .308, 214, LYM LRN GC 311284 Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.600 inch = 66.04 mm

    C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Start low and work up slowly. IMR4227 is my favorite 30-30 powder. I shoot a 190 grain cast and use between 15 and 16 grains for a mild load. In your single shot overall length is not a problem but if your rifle is short throated it may result in the bullet being seated deeper than you would like. Only way to find out is to try.
    Good Luck to you,
    Rick

P.91 of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd Edition, has the article by Frank Marshall on using the 311-284 in his 30-30 bolt action hunting rifles:
"For hunting with this rifle [a Savage bolt action] I use the 311-284 with 30 grains of 4350 with any large rifle primer."

He goes onto elaborate on how he made the pointy 311-284 into a heavy FN. He was a wily old bird and a first rate marksman who knew just about all there was to know--at least back then-- about shooting cast accurately in 30 caliber rifles.

Thanks for the data I was thinking imr 4227 around 1600 fps would be a good starting point. The bullet fit the chamber perfectly at the top driving band.
