Winchester started dating their boxes about 1906. These could be prior to that year.
The 1878 patent date was for Gardners primer patent (he was employed by Winchester), using the folded anvil. This patent superseded Oliver Winchester's 1874 (flat anvil) primer patent. I forget when Winchester stopped printing the patent date on the boxes, but the anvil design was used until the 1930's before switching to what we use today.
