Edit: I am wondering if this is a poorly-phrased iteration of 'insufficient OD' ?
"Too thin" reads to me as 'wall thickness', not OD ...

I have a number of 44 Mag rifles threaded for 5/8x24; most were done by my local gunsmith using the Silencerco thread spec;
(feel free to PM me to get their excellent rifle threading reference .PDF)
But Chiappa does their 44Mag rifle in that threading as well.
When I started all this, I even talked to a few techs at SilencerCo who recommended that thread spec for 44Mag rifles.
IMO, the largest problem is sufficient barrel OD for a reference shoulder; SilencerCo cites 0.720" as a minimum OD for that thread spec, but I have went slightly below that with no issues.
My Ruger 77/44 had an OD of 0.635" @ 16" which is technically insufficient; after working with that for a /very/ short period, I ended up having a larger collar installed so I didn't have to worry.

It's fine, lots of 44 and 450 barrels with 5/8-24 threads. That said I prefer 11/16-24 on them just to be difficult. 44 AR10 wildcat barrel I'm making for a buddy with 5/8"-24 threads, Mine will have basically the same contour only with 11/16-24 threads with a slight bump out behind the shoulder.

I just did a 5/8-24 on a 44 mag last week for a customer. A customer ask me to do a 1/2-28 on a 357 a few weeks back and after doing the numbers I found that the wall thickness would only be .025". Not enough to hold the weight of a can under recoil so I went with 9/16-28 which brought the wall thickness up to .055", about the same as 5/8-24 on a 44 mag. This is the wall thickness at the bottom of the threads or the weakest point.

The minor diameter for that threading is 0.456" per the Surefire threading spec;
With a 0.358" bore that leaves ~0.049" wall thickness by my calculation not 0.025" ??
I concur on 1/2"x28 being marginal but appears to work on 0.358" bores;
Before going that route on my Rem660 350RM, I asked Liberty Suppressors if that would be OK and they said yes; it has worked satisfactorily so far.
Also that thread spec is on my Ruger 77/357, no problems there as well.
