Holy Toledo !!!!
This is a list of endless options. And this is my favorite
subject since I jumped into casting boolits.
My T/C Contender carbine in 30-30 gives me lots of versatility;
from 48 gr round ball, Ideal 3118 115 gr FP, Sierra 125 gr FNHP,
150's and 170's cast and jacketed, even spitzers. All that and
pert near at any velocity I want.
Can the OP's grandson operate a Contender ? I'll bet he's
gonna find out.
The only drawback to 30-30 here in Ohio is it's not
deer legal. Enter the Henry .357 single shot, a close
second in versatility, albeit a little heavy. (They come
with sling studs, ya know.)
For me, this is what it's all about.
