Are you sure you lament? They were threaded in their homeland for BFD's to fire wooden bullets and had an issued plastic protector for when not in use. Some had flash units installed post import.

When I was issued an M14 the stock was not finished. We were handed a piece of sandpaper and a small bottle of oil to finish the stock. Most just smoothed it a bit and slathered on the oil for an 'arsenal' type finish. Another guy and I sanded it a bit more and ended up with more of a 'sporter' type finish like in the post above. Yep, in the field it got 'dinged' up a bit.

I'm curious how the gas system works on the bottom one.
The Garand, in its as-issued form, is about the best looking it's going to get. I can't think of any modifications that aesthetically enhance the rifle. Maybe an aftermarket high grade wood or laminate stock, but in its original configuration. Not some "sporting" abomination.
