That look on your face, when you shift into 6th gear, but it's not there.
I have a decent old Remington. I really like the sights, the cock on close takes a little getting used to but fine old rifles.
An older lady in my home town gave this to my dad in the 1960s after her husband (a WWI vet) had passed away. My brother has a very nice 03A1 that she also gave to my dad.

I really like either the P14 or M17 in sporting rifles. Have a Remington P14 in 303/25, another in 303 Epps Improved and and M17 in 308 with a Parker-Hale 5C range sight (full bore rifle).
The Epps is made by necking up a 303 to 8mm then forming a shoulder in the case (RHS) and fireforming.

I've built several rifles using P-14 and M-1917 actions mostly in 375 H&H but did do one in 45-70 and three in 416 Rigby. I've taken several elk with the 375 and one with the 416. Both worked quite well. The spike was the one that caught a 400 grain, homemade, jacketed bullet from the 416 just to right of center of the chest while facing me at 30 yards. The tracking job was quite short. The rag-horn, IIRC, was about 100 yards. He wobbled off about 25 yards and ran headlong into a ponderosa pine and tipped over. I still have several Enfield and other actions but I'll probably not build any more rifles as Oregon has become very antigun. The local Echo-Bigots' are trying to outlaw hunting and even raising animals for food. You would think that sooner or later they would figure out eating grass was not all that healthy for humans.
BIG OR SMALL I LIKE THEM ALL, 577 TO 22 HORNET.
Good luck doing it today. I got through the project about five years ago with a very real feeling of "this era is done and I'm the last Mohican". I bought the action from a member on another forum who made a half-start at a .416 before losing traction. I purchased the bottom metal and mag box from a custom rifle builder who stated that it was or is the last Enfield magnum box he did or is likely to ever do. Stock is Bastogne walnut from Richard's Microfit on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Barrel was from Lilja, who seems to be the only makers doing carbon steel blanks large enough in diameter to match the big Enfield. Metal work was one of the last projects of a gunsmith before he vacated California; stock work by an aging small shop guy. Scope base started life as a one-piece Leupold for a Model 70, which was too short. Center section got cut out and the rear shimmed up for proper height. Could have bought a CZ 500 for a lot less money and grief at the time, but wanted it on an Enfield instead of a Mauser. Not sayin' it had to make sense. . .

Story, many years ago there was a '17 at then LGS. It was priced at $40. ( early '90's) I asked and it seems it was a VFW gun, chamber welded shut, otherwise all complete and in very nice shape. Months went by, I went a local gun show and bingo, there was as a barrel NEW, dated 1943. IIRC. $40. It came home with me. And, we stopped at said LGS and got the demill. I called my buddy, amateur smith with lots of skill and knowledge. He gave the the "you have to cut those barrels off....l" lecture followed by the " it takes special tools to get those apart.." lecture. And then he says " It just happens that I bought at auction today all the tools to get that off. Have you had supper?" 2 hours later I was at his house with big pizza. About 3 hours later I was headed home with a brand new unfired 30-06.
I never did shoot it (yet). retiring soon and that's on the list.
