Anyone use 700X with Sierra 170 gr. JHP. Loads would be appreciated.
Anyone use 700X with Sierra 170 gr. JHP. Loads would be appreciated.
I have used 700X with a 165gr cast hollow point (MP mold) . I was very pleased with the load . It was accurate , clean , hard hitting load with fairly low recoil . The spent cases fell out of the cylinder when I raised the muzzle . I used a gr less than Hodgdon's current listed max . Hope this helps , Regards Paul
I use H-110 with the 170gr Sierras, but I've used 700-X with the plated 210gr X-Tremes for back yard plinking. Works well with about 7 grains of powder.
On LoadData.com they list 7.4 start, 8.4 top....
That is a pretty fast burning powder to get anywhere close to top end loads... If you can find some, H110/296 is very good... I use 26.0 which eliminates all the air space in the case.
Thanks for the replies.
800 x can work well with 170 (see Paco)
works well with all weights up to about 230 or less
800X scares me for some reason...
hmmmm? used a numbers of pounds of it for a while as my only powder I also did herco that way for a bit. Up to say 230gr or so I never had a problem but never used it in really cold temps. I guess with any of these faster shotgun style powder,,, respect for it would seem to be prudent as they can go up very fast with not much powder. RJM52 you likely have a point.. 800x can very accurate and fast plus it was cast friendly
Thanks for 800X idea. Ran out of Unique, but have a can of 800X I have never found a use for GW
I agree with you for Paco. Ed Matinus? a ballisticion for Winchester.use to be. said 800x was the single best powder for .41 and normal bullets. Now a days I normally shoot about 230 or so. Over 250 is usually that is in my .410GNR or maybe my Henry .41. If you need data I can suggest some -- then do as you choose.
Hello. Looking for some load data in .41 magnum with Rim Rock bullets 240 grain Keith LSWC-FB bullet with 2400 & Universal. I’d like to get 1,100-1,200 fps from my 4 5/8” Blackhawks (new & old models). Thanks.
Chris
I get good accuracy using the GT Bullets 240 Keith @ 1.675" OAL over 10.8 gr. of HS6 with Federal 155 mag primer for about 1150 fps in my 4-5/8" Blackhawk. Haven't tried Universal or 2400.
LOBO , A chronograph will tell you what you are wanting . If i was " in your shoes " I would start with 2400 . I believe 17.0 gra should get you there . Alliant lists with a 210 gr bulllet 19.0 grs of 2400 as a max load . I have used that 17.0 load with my own cast 240 gr swc with good results . I never used a magnum primer . Regards Paul
Yeah, what he said..............
Finally bought one of the few .41s I have had on the wish list for many years.. Taurus Titanium 2.5" with fixed sights...
Came complete with original box and paperwork...
Only had a chance to take it out once for a couple of cylinder full but with the Lee 165 Keith from a Group Buy here and 6.5 grains of Unique in a Special case it was very pleasant shooting...
More testing to come...Bob
Good post on hunting with .41s...

So anything new in .41 Land???
Took several of my 4" S&Ws to the range the other day and was reminded that with wood grips and "old" hands I need to keep bullet weight to less than 220 grains and 1100 fps... It may be time to go back to the Pachmayer Presentation grips that I used for so many years while in LE and carrying an N-frame. No issues at all with SAs as they roll..

Another powder that really performs well in the 41 magnum is SR 4756 . It's been discontinued for years , sad to say . I have over 10#'s so will be putting it to good use I understand that it gave stellar performance in the 38 super and 40 S&W as well . Another powder that I have a sizeable stock of is IMR 7625 . Again sadly discontinued years ago . It also has found great favor in revolver calibers for me , starting with 38 spl and stopping with 45 Colt . Regards Paul
