Probably not - The National Personnel Records Center fire of 1973, also known as the 1973 National Archives fire, was a fire that occurred at the Military Personnel Records Center in the St. Louis suburb of Overland , Missouri, from July 12–16, 1973. The fire destroyed some 16 million to 18 million official military personnel records.

All depends on what part of the alphabet your last name is, as it was only parts of the records that were destroyed.

Yes; some remain just depends on where the name is on the list may have been destroyed maybe not ???
Getting your military records is one thing; getting someone else's records is another.

It is pretty easy to ask the person to see a copy or proof of the citation. The real recipients have the papers. VFW and American Legion members are very helpful keeping the ranks "clean".

My data request got a: I was in the Army, 101st Airborne Div, no schools, no dates, nothing, just when I entered and exited. Must have been a minimum records, on a computer, type file. I probably had my records burned in the fire, if so, I understand they do have a minimal record of you on a computer, that is it. If I can not get my School records then there is a big part of my records missing.

Uh, all WWII records for the army WERE destroyed. I wanted some of my dad's records after he passed and a family member can request. I got a no records available except the bare min data. Recently found a copy of his dd214 in some files.

the man that i was refering to died a couple years ago. he was a good guy; but, i think that he "embelished" a lot of his exploits and the medals that he had.
My dad served in VN as a Seabee. He was able to get his service records and his old medals sent to him that he lost in various moves and several he never knew he was awarded from the VA.
As far as stolen Valor, he can usually spot fake VN vets as he was a surveyor/civil engineer. He remembers maps, places, terrain, etc and a few times people have been telling stories and he will question them about some location or terrain feature then lean over to me and say he's full of it.
That said I do have all the letters he wrote to my grandmother and pictures he sent home. Back then people wrote and did things. IF someone claims to have been there they should be able to produce this stuff if no offical records can be found .

A good friend of mine served in the Coast Guard and was in VN. Service records only showed the ships he served on. So he went to the National Archives. They had all the ship's records and rosters, and his name came up on all the ship's logs. He said the Archives staff was very helpful and accommodating.
