Here's a 40-65 Number 1 Sporter, heavy / half round, that showed up today.
Shiloh 1877 done in English Walnut and their AA finish .
For me there is something about a 74 Sharps that I think puts them above the others and I have a lot of different makes I collected over the years starting back at 1954 when I could buy a roller for around $18. or less but I always wanted the Sharps that were out of my price range even at $30. during my young years.
Below are some of the Shiloh's I posted pictures here that somehow got lost. The first is my hunting rifle the .44-77 and in that bunch there are 6 Shiloh's and a couple more have been added since that picture was taken. Most are in the .44 caliber but also in the .40 and a .50 as well a .45's but I favor the .44's for long range.
The quality of the Shiloh is as good as it gets and also their warranty. They stand behind what they make and if it breaks they will give you a new part at no cost. In the line up is a Pedersoli Quigley rifle I got when Cabela first stocked it, it's in the .45-120/3-1/3. no it was not a mistake rifle it shot very well. But repairs made me retire it, but it's still in the safe.
All of my Shiloh's shoot very well but some have their own personality getting into the center ring but we always came to an agreement in the end

Yes I have taken two deer with it of coarse the hill past the deer got most of the energy !
That load is a 712 grain bullet 150 grains 1 1/2FG and is doing an average of 1627 f/s for almost 4200 foot pounds of energy .
When I think back on all the **** I learned in high school it's a wonder I can think at all ! And then my lack of education hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall.
My 1874 Carbine AFTER I redid the crappy wood finish it came with.
If you are going to make a hole in something. MAKE IT A BIG ONE!
i got my first shiloh 1978 xmas 34 inch 45/120 $800 canadian ,crazy caliber sold it after a lot of trying to get it to shoot, now after thirty some years , and experience still a shiloh montana roughrider 45/70 i love it wade
Ahh the 50-140 the Sharps Cartridge that never was. Well not until after Sharps closed its doors in 1881.
Winchester introduced the US Market to 3.25 cases in the 45 and 50 calibers in 1885-86.
A bit of research shows that to be the case.

Yes, I had bought it from a friend who had barely shot it (he can't take the recoil?).
This is the original finish which was completely open grained.
This is after I refinished it.

The grain direction through the wrist would bother me more than the finish!

That is a nice finish you did on that one. What was your process?
thanks,
Chris.
Thundermaker the recoil is quite "BRISK" A few shots do not cause flinching for hunting I have never needed to shoot twice .

Understood, I see what you mean. I bought one of my Shilohs with standard wood and finish after owning two with semi-fancy wood. Although the semi-fancies also had a standard finish, it looked much better on the denser wood. I considered the finish on the plain wood as a base coat, and went after it like you did. It took a long time and it was amazing how much different the same finish was on the two grades of wood, but I finally got a finish that filled all the open grain on the plain wood.
You did a really nice job on that one, looks good!
