Can a .50-90 be shortened to make .50-45? Is the rim diameter the same?
Can a .50-90 be shortened to make .50-45? Is the rim diameter the same?
I have shortened the .50-70 to .50-45 and have shot them with no trouble in my Navy rolling block carbine.
I too use 50-70 cases for the 50-45-400 Navy Carbine. The thickness of the 50-90 brass when trimmed so short may be too thick to chamber when loaded. In that case they would need to be inside reamed or outside turned in order to work. It would be easy enough to cut one down and try it. The rim diameter of the 50-70 government and the 50-90 Sharps are nearly identical so that should work. If you already have the 50-90 brass I would think you could trade it for 50-70 quite easily. Lately 50-70 brass has been scarce but not impossible to locate.
Hope this helps.
BIG OR SMALL I LIKE THEM ALL, 577 TO 22 HORNET.
I make them out of 8M/M LEBEL. trim and load, fire form, with 30 grs, of 3fg black. I use old Berdan primed military cases & drill out primer pocket's and load with LR, RIFLR PRIMERS. seal them in with fingernail lacquer, or red grade LOCKTITE.
if the neck's split on the 1948 dated mil. fired brass no matter it is usually above, up from where that you need to cut off with a DERMEL.
