17 to 18 grains of IMR 4227 works for me. Been safe in my 1873 Winchester.
Use at your own risk, you don't mention what firearm you're using.
7 to 8 grains of Unique also works.
Thanks I just picked up a Colt SAA made in1896 in 38-40 Have a Winchester 1894 made in 1894 coming next week. I'm glad to see I can try Unique as I already use that in most of my pistol loads. Looks like I'll pick up some Starline Brass at 44cents each. Looks like I need .401 lead bullets. Can you verify that? Do you put any kind of wad between the powder and the bullet? Any references you can recommend?
Thank You Bryon

No wad used. Your bore size, you should verify by slugging the barrel, then try find one about .001 over measurement.
Unique should work well. 4227 could be bit slow for handgun, but will do if you need.
After a little experimenting I've decided to to with a .401 180 gr lead bullet using 6.8 grains of Unique. I tried 7.5 grains of Unique but seemed a little to much for my liking. Thanks to all who helped.
