Looking for experience with Heavy cast in the buigger 35's

Specifically the 300 green cast bullets in 358 Winchester, 35 Whelan, 350 Remington and 358 Norma Magnum Magnum.

I've used three 5809 Lyman bullet for many years but since turning to powder coat, I can no longer use it because of nose diameter issues. So about three years ago I bought Accurate Mold 36-270c. It's been really good shoots great and I like it, but…. I'd really like to have a 300+ gr 35 caliber.

So looking at Accurate catalog again I ordered a 36-310 W mold hoping for good results in the above calibers. I chose this bullet for two reasons one was it's a slickside and I plan on powder coating it but also I was able to adjust the nose diameter down to .347 to give me room for the powder coat so I don't have the same issues I did with the 009.

Any experience his comments greatly appreciated.

my experience on the 35 caliber is limited to only one rifle, the 35/30-30. i was going to go with 270gr bullshop stomper(made from https://bullshop.weebly.com/-35-cali...t-bullets.html ) but i only shoot 200gr rcbs fn gc in mine. altho the 35/30 can handle the weight much better than a 35 rem.

i have 280gr rn gc and 275gr wfn gc in 9.3mm (9.3x57) and i can't complain about it. the deer do tho!!! i have a bunch of boolits that are 310gr rn (both paper patch and powder coating), but i don't have the time to shoot them, yet!!!

---No experience with anything that heavy, Tom put together the 36-254C for me & I'm well pleased. Both of my 358s are 20" & 1:12 twist, I didn't seem to get great accuracy until I got out of the box of fps & really pushed it. Wow what a sledge hammer. Please keep us up to date with this project, I'm really interested. But sorry I'm no help.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the input. Its only time till someone who has been shooting the Whelen for decades to comment.

I have shot man of the excellent Lyman 35809 (009 now) its about 280 and highly acclaimed. But powder coated it becomes useless as it no longer chambers.

CW, the NOE 360-182 WFN you introduced me to also wouldn't chamber in the 35 Whelen due to the PC on the nose and front driving band. I began to turn the boolit over to resize that portion a tad smaller and success was instantly achieved. What a great shooter now. Could you do this with the 35809 to obtain the same results?

GOOD NEES BROTHER!!! Love that bullet in my 358 Win and 357 Maxi!! (Chambers fine here)

I have a few nose bushings.

I was fiddling with the LEE 180 Monday. Not a "fun" affair it shaves lead doesn't squeeze. So most of that bore rider portion is now void of PC. That was only sizing to .304!! PERBABLY will still make contact!!

I have 352 & 350 nose sizers for the 35. Cannot do in one step. I ordered some more sizers Monday from Al to see what smaller "bites" might do.

Good conversation with Al few years back when I first saw this issue. Even he called it more of a band aide then a "fix".

TAG for the good info. I have built a new 35 whelen and yet to pull the trigger on a live round.

I have seen pictures of half coated bullets. Perhaps if you could figure out how to do that. Just an idea.

Easy if you use a "gun" to coat.
Difficult at best with shake n bake.

If SMALL quantity was needed I guess you could whipe off powder. But I haven't tried.

But might be a very good idea! At the very least should be tried to prove good or not. One worry with softer bullets is obturation. The amount is pressure and alloy dependent. Meaning its not universal accept looking directly at pressure level and specific alloy. So a soft bullet pushed a bit (because you can with PC) you might "swell" that bullet so that slight clearance at the nose... Might now contact and likely lead the bore.

I looked at the mold Tom is cutting for you, & I think that I can see some of your thoughts. What will be your purpose, target, hunting, competition or all the above. I am curious to the outcome you get from this venture.

Ultimately for me most everything somehow connects to hunting. But shooting comes first after and in between.

Look up the thread on NOE's Thumper. Lots of load work in that thread.
