What are the legalities of posting once fired brass overseas - eg from the US to Australia, personal use to personal use? Can they just be chucked in a padded envelope and put in the mail?

I'd try at least. Fired cases are just inert pieces of brass. But that's logical but the USPS may disagree...
I have purchased once fired brass on several occasions and it was delivered via regular postal service, but that's just in the US...

As an aside, I used to ship cast bullets to a guy in Canada about 12-13 years ago. I had to fill out a special form and there was a limit on the number of bullets I could ship there. Needless to say, I always shipped the maximum amount.

Yes I understand its an offence to send brass to Australia without the proper documentation, Had a mate who lost a $1,000 worth of Boyd stocks to our customs. We in Australia can import some items with a form from our Police Weapons Section. If I was the one you were sending them to, I would be thankful of the thought but don't do it. Regards Stephen
I get barrel liners in BUT I obtain a form B709A first then send to USA and they then send the item and the completed form back. The barrel liner is customs declared as "machined parts".

Yes, the State Department but for ITAR approval of items on the Munitions List, they have to get DOD approval before they can approve the Export License.

Iirc, empty shotgun shells, even brass cases like Magtech's, can be exported to Canada from the US, but rifle and pistol brass cannot. Go figure. And don't take my word here on the interweb as true fact, research it yourself.
I'm going to see about getting my brother in Australia to ship some empty brass to me here in Washington State. Does any one know what the procedure is on the Aus end and here in the US? I really don't want to get a visit from someone for doing the wrong thing!

If the majority of previous posts are correct about shipping brass to the land of Oz, an Oz to US shipment could also be illegal. It might just be your brother that gets the visit.
Why would you even want to fool with this? Can’t you find the brass you need anywhere in the US?
Some brass is distinctly AU brass. I simply ordered new empty 222R brass from a retail dealer in AU for this 222R that I built on a Cadet Action. The 222R is an AU cartridge designed for use in cadet conversions. It was shipped to my door.
Major problem with AU is they do not have an actual Constitution, just a pile of papers, as was explained to me by Rob Abel, the then head of the ASSF, AU's equivalent of the NRA. The effect is that their Parlement can change what is wrong or right, or the citizens rights at will.
Sooo, what may be OK and legal one day, is wrong and illegal the very next day.
With the internet, you can contact and converse with dealers in AU pretty easily, to get the current legal answers, directly from a licensed dealer in AU. No more difficult than reading this post. I would suggest you do so.
