Win 540 what use it for?

Was given one pound can, it smells-looks ok. Just wondering what I can use it for in 357 mag 9x19 or 45acp. Any reasonable suggestions or experiences?

I use it in 28 ga shotgun. Look up HS6 loads, trusting my memory here, but I believe it is the same powder as win 540.

As a twin to HS6 I would look for HS6 loads in your 357 and sub the WW 540 in its place unless you find an older book with 540 in it.

My favorite use is for upper medium field loads in a 44 magnum with the RCBS 250K (HS6) and I use the Hodgdons #26 load manual. I load it there at 11.8 gr for 24,000 psi and 1066 FPS from a 4” barrel and 1176 FPS from a 7.5”

The powder pushes lead a little faster at a little lower pressure than the vaunted Unique and it meters like SIN!

The Hodgdon website says "HS-6 is identical to Winchester's discontinued 540"

I still use 540 in ounce-and-a-half 12 gauge shotgun hunting loads, using Winchester red wads. My father left me a lot of both components.

I use it in several different calibers. Just use HS6 data if you have no older WW data brochures with W540 loads.

The Winchester 1995 powder manual has lots of handgun loads for this powder.
All the cartridges you list are in there and more.

Nowadays I use 13gr under 250-280gr cast in my Redhawk 45 Colt. Used it for years to load shotshell duplicating WW 1 1/4oz heavy field loads. Also it is correct that HS-6 is the replacement for it.
