    Outer Coating

    Any one know the dark coating the mold makers put on iron molds?

    Might be? I had to remove a little rust and used Evaporust and the rust went Poof. but so did the finish!

    They could also be black oxide nitride finished.......a process that puts a nice black finish on steel......using heat, a vacuum furnace and disassociated ammonia gas ( to get the N2 out of it). Many inexpensive drill makers use that for the finish of their twist drills. Something you would not want to attempt at home.

    The aerospace industry here in Phoenix uses it for special parts.

    Just using the mold will color it. Heat and oxygen.
