Why is the case length of the reloads and the bullet diameters?

After pulling some dimensions it is indeed a 38/56!

Back when I wore a uniform back in the mid 60's. The deck crew used single shot line throwing shotguns to shoot a line from one ship to another. They were basically smooth bored with no choke. And the 45/70 MKI was probably an earlier line throwing blank. The newer ones usually have a M32 designation on the head of the case. Frank
