Wish someone would Build one like this, Looks like a very Good Design.
Your plan is perfect.
I used to own one EXACTLY like it.
Stopped 44 mag easily with no deformation ( of the trap )
I am pretty sure the plates were hardned.

i have seen one something like that one only they were using water solulable oil in the drum to keep lead dust down.
This is an incorrect statement. There are more than a few rounds that don't reach 4000fps that will go through 1/4" and thicker AR400.AR 400 of 1/4"+ thickness cannot be penetrated by less than 4000 fps.

Better late than never.
I wound up making a simple 45 deg one that is 8 foot tall and 16 feet wide.
It works for my purposes but is not as easy to recover lead from as your design.
Jmorris, like your bullet stop, it’s not really a trap but a cool idea nonetheless. Love the slo-mo resetting targets. I built mine from a splitterbox from the phosphate fertilizer plant where I worked for 40 yrs. it’s just a 630 lb steel funnel that I had my local welder add a 90 degree ell to the bottom and set it on the long side. Lead winds up in a tray. I’ll take a pix after the rains done.
Jmorris, I was surprised you did not add a simple thin sheet to the bottom of your backstop for collection of lead.
Jailer that look`s like a nice trap , could I get you to make one for me?? just say where to send money.
My pap made one like Jmorris has but about 1/3 as wide and not quite as tall best I can tell from the picture . Worked like a charm . Ours had a 6 inch lip across the front and the bottom was kept full of sand to catch the lead . I would dig it out when it was wet and sift when it dried . Got the chunks as well as most of the splatter . Usually had a chunk at the rear of fused bullets that had slid down the back. We had it on a friends farm and ended up shot full of holes by the unauthorised armor piercing crowd that would show up when no one was watching. My dad got some plate from the hell hole off a scrapped chopper and we added it to the back , no more holes but it did have some humongus craters by the time the trap finally fell apart .

Love the trailer mount. Please go into business with this one!
Slight modification. After shooting a bit and the bucket filling up with lead the trailer would tip back due to the axle being mounted in the center of the trailer. I ended up cutting it off and moving it back as far as I could. Also added a folding adjustable tongue jack from Harbor Freight for $20 to support it from the front. It works perfectly now.

This is really interesting since I've been contemplating building one of these and I want to be portable as well. I really like the trailer it sits on. Are the original images from this thread still around? I'd like to see what you had. What are the dimensions for the target area opening? What metal did you use? 1/4" plate? What calibers have you tested it out with?
The opening is 2'x2'. The sides are 2'x4' 1/4 AR400 steel. Top and bottom are 1/4 mild steel. After shooting it a bit I could have saved a bit of money and used mild steel for the whole thing. So far it's just had pistol rounds shot into it but I plan on trying 45-70 and 300 blk soon.
