Well today was my birthday. After church the wife and I went an checked our trail cams, and filled up our feeders. I went down on my buddy's farm, and drove back on a fire trail road in my Ranger, and told the wife of many does I had seen and shot their over the years, and told her I was surprised we didn't jump some does driving in down the trail, as they liked to bed on the high ridge by the field, which we were down under about 70 yds. I turned around and started to drive out, when I saw movement, and realized it was a doe, up on the ridge, just like always. I stopped the ranger, got out and loaded my Original Trapdoor Springfield, and she started walking away. I walked about 10 steps, and stopped, and she took 2 more steps, right out in the open and stopped. I had a slight quartering away shot, off hand at around 60yds, and at the shot she dropped! I was shooting a Lyman/Gould 350gr HP I cast myself, loaded with 15 grains of Unique powder. I had hit high, due to aiming at a 45degree angle, and tried to hit the spine, but hit a little higher than I meant to. Anyway, dead Is dead. This is the first time in several years I have got a deer on my birthday, which is usually opening weekend. This doe was my fourth and final tag for the year, and I have only been hunting 5 times, a banner year by anyone's standards. This is especially rewarding after the last 2 years of bad health, and I really wanted to harvest a deer with the old trapdoor, made in 1884. I will be gifting this to a local family who has been thru the ringer the past year, as I have just enough room in the freezer for the wifes buck tag she will fill in a day or two. I will get some pics uploaded soon.
