The graphite powder works okay to lubricate under the sprue plate, but I haven't found anything better on the flats and inside the cavities than using a pencil; the pressure of rubbing it in just bonds and lasts longer. The graphite spray also works well; I find it very useful when sprayed on the ingot molds when melting range lead.
I had a friend who showed me how to do that about a year and a half ago...the late, great Jim McBride, a.k.a. myflatline, a.k.a. jimcollc here on cast boolits.
We had plans to get together and cast a stockpile, as I don’t have the room to set it up where I live...but it will now have to wait.
Got into my busy season but I figured I would check in.
The problem turned out to be operator error.
I had carefully, but not carefully enough, drilled out the orifice plate.
Apparently the drill was too large and it ruined the plate.
Ordered a new orifice plate from Magma and the splashing went away.
Such a simple fix.
