That's a nice find!
That's a nice find!
I paid $75 for the set, a bit more than $4 a pound. That's not as low as my average cost on scrounged pewter of around $3 a pound, but I've finally realized that I should factor in time, gas and wear and tear on my car and psyche. Pewter is a bit hard to come by at any price out here on the Left Coast, with me scoring usually less than a pound per find no more than every two or three visits to multiple thrifts or estate sales. At the start the hunt was fun, especially when I found other things of use that I could pick up at the same time. Now I am busy with other things, and the time and expense of the hunt mean a bit more. So a find like this I felt should not be turned down.

Picked this "Old English Pewter" mug up for under a dollar, having a hard time melting it down, seem to like the design of the handle.
Found at an estate sale. Nice heavy dish. "Fecit VCM" "Made in Portugal". Part of a total haul of 6.25 pounds for $15.
I may just keep the Stiefe vase and creamer.

The Stief stuff with a catalog number are plentiful. I got a portugese piece with all the touchmarks such as yours. Nice stuff with plenty of weight. Still, the lead free stamp makes it modern era and subject to being puddleized.
As I'm here learning a lot. This thread and many of the other stickies are wonderful instructional materials.
Wow, so much to learn.
Thanks!

Would this be pewter? Kind of hot to fire up the pot and make a definite determination.
Has the look and the heaviness for size. I picked it up on the off-chance that "S.N." might actually mean "Sn," or tin.

I'm only out a quarter if it isn't.
That doesn’t look like pewter to me. It’s obviously cast.

OK, thanks, Imashooter. A few sellers at the local swap meet seem to come up with the occasional pewter (or pewterlike) ware, and the rest have nothing but glass, aluminum, stainless, etc.
Haven’t started seriously on yard sales, and the junk stores around here have nothing that I’ve noticed.
The few pieces of Portugese pewter I've found had "peltre" or "Tin" with a percentage number after it.
I doubt that I would melt that either!
A fair amount of pewter is cast, particularly where finer detail is required in the design. If it is heavy and can be bent easily I buy it. So far, so good. Yesterday I was passing through Park Rapids MN and found quite a bit at an antique store. Lady said she has one other guy who buys it to alloy for boolits. She buys leftover stuff from estate sales or gets it for free just for hauling it away.

Took a 4 dollar gamble at Goodwill, no Hallmark found. Potmetal or Pewter?
The symbol for pewter in a bunch of Europe is an angel. You got a picture of the back especially any hanger?
see what your pocketknife says. if pewter, you should be able to fold her.
This had a label that said pewter and was bendable. $3
I have a chance to purchase this pewter collection locally for seventy five dollars. I dont want to ask her about how much they weigh. She might not like my intentions to melt the pewter. Can someone with experience comment if it is worth the asking price? What are your thoughts on purchasing the pewter? Thank you in advance. Blackhawk
