What would you guys consider a starting load in 7.62X39 with .312 Lee 160 grain IMR4227 for a Yugo 59/66? I'm estimating around 15 grains starting to around 19 grains maximum. Am I in the right ballpark?
Thanks

From my notes (warning, could come from anywhere) NOT safe published data.
Load data for IMR-4227 using 123 Gr. bullets. Start 20.0 Grs. Max 22.0 Grs.
125 gr IMR 4227 18.5 1995 (Good load, accurate)
Considering your loading a heavier bullet, I would lower starting charge accordingly.
Roughly speaking increasing bullet weight a quarter so I would decrease charge a quarter.
Start at 15, work up watching for pressure signs.
My load is the Lee .312 185 gr GC over 20 grains of IMR 4895. And I'm darn happy with it.
It is slower, but accurate, cycles my old Yugo SKS well. And that is not a published load either.
I started at 15 and at 20 found the accuracy I wanted and just quit.
I just started this fall, 13 grains of 4227 did not cycle the bolt fully, 14 grains does(reasonably accurate)
Never made past that(winter arrived)
Using the the Lee 160 mold
Thanks guys. I was not close enough. Glad I asked.
Gramps is that a Lee load manual?
Or the new Lyman cast bullet book?

Grmps has the source ID'd. There was some work on this done by Junior1942 some years ago. His notes are still available, I'm sure.
Well IMR 4227 was a waste of time in my yugo 59/66. 17gr and not enough gas to even fully extract the case. Didn't bother going to 17.5gr
Glad I took a pound of H335 with me. 20gr gave good extraction and locked the bolt back.

I have an old Norinco bolt gun, I had to rebarrell it as the previous owner just used old military ammo and didn't clean it, but back to the loading I used an ADI powder AR2207 I was only trying jacketed projectiles 110 gr HP's and 125 gr HP's, 24 grains for the 110 and 25.2 for the 125 gr point of impact at a 100 yards was the same.
Regards Trevor
With the Lee 155 or 160 gr .312 cast bullets try H4895. Start at 21 gr and work up to 28 gr (27 gr may be max capacity for some cases).

Lately been thinking of a CZ 527 in 7.62 x 39. In general, would that be a good rifle/ cartridge to cast for?
As calibers go, I do cast for mine, and enjoy it. But the lowly .30-30 is better choice IMO in many respects.
That long neck is MADE for cast. .30-40 krag is IMO another.
That being said, I do love shooting large for caliber cast in my 2 7.62x39 rifles. A Yugo SKS and a single shot Handi rifle. The second is very very flexible. Wild to mild power wise, 90 to 185 gr.
Pretty much whatever turns your crank.
