In preparations for this years firearm season I decided it was time to play around a little bit with soft nose cast boolits and some boolits with the nose split by tin foil. The soft nose boolits are kind of a pain to make but they are very effective on deer, I have used them in a .348 with excellent results. I wanted to try the foil in the nose and see how they compare as they are much easier to make. The first picture, #8 shows an unfired 165 LBT boolit, and a soft nose fired at 2000fps, 1550fps and 1000fps left to right. I figured the 1550fps would be close to impact velocity at 100yards. These bullets were fired into gallons jugs of water and all penetrated 3 jugs and were found found in the fourth with the exception of the slowest boolit which went through four jugs and stopped in a old Cabela's catalog.
The next picture, #9 is off the split nose boolits @ 1550fps and 1000fps, the 1550 load came apart in the first jug, the petals were found in the second jugs and the base in the fourth. The 1000fps load went through all four jugs and into the soaked catalog.

The final photo, #13 is L-R; split nose, soft nose, hollow pointed, and plain bullet, all cast out of 50/50 and fired at 1550fps.
I am very curious as to how the split nose would perform on deer, from what I saw today it should be devastating on a lung shot. The plain old 50/50 bullet is probably the best all around pick for hunting with out any fancy stuff needed. My rifle will shoot them to the same point of aim as my regular WW load, and I can get 5 or six shots before any sign of leading at 2000fps, which is plenty of shots for deer hunting. I have some extra of the split nose boolits some cast out of WW and some out of 50/50 if some one wants some to try out on deer this fall.
