I never had a problem with them , I run the lead hot and the pour rate slow with a bottom pour and it works out fine .

Have several molds with Ricks new sprue plate with trough and find it much easier to use with a bottom pour pot, simply fill the farthest cavity first and have it a few degrees higher than the last cavity.
You then simply slid the mold towards the rear of the lead pot will pouring. A finished sprue is about a half inch wide quarter inch tall or so and separates as one large chunk which is easily dumped back in the pot.
With a hot plate I've found I can rotate two molds without over heating them and get clean sharp bases all the time.
Between the trough sprue plates and the hot plate mold heater I've found my reject rate has dropped into the half percent range.
But as has been said before technique is everything and your milage may vary.

All my old H&G molds have a trough and would anyone dispute H&G knew how to do it right?
I have an ancient LYMAN 4cavity #454190 with a trough. It's probably older than I am (63) It casts the most perfect bullets of any mold I've ever used. I bought it at a garage sale 40years ago.
