There's a lot of rabid collectors at the CMP forums with deep pockets and fat bankrolls, I garontee they'll be snatching up the best ones as fast as they can. Us po' boy normal folks will be lucky to get a sniff of the dregs.
I blame this thread. Over Memorial Day weekend I filled out an order form for a CMP RM1 Special Field Grade. I understand these are refurbished and have no collector value, but still it is a Garand. I couldn't find a bad thing about the Special Field Grades on the web, at least not from a shooters perspective. Figured a refurbished one would be a good starter Garand and an added bonus will be the CMP should have all my stuff on file when the Garands come home from the Philippines. Letter with order form and copies of my stuff went out 5-30. Will see what the CMPs turn around time is.

Better show us pics of that thing when it shows up.
One thing for sure is the days of buying my $165 IHC are long gone. Didn't know much about them back then ( still don't ) but I was a little vexed when I opened the box and found a IHC with all of the correct parts and barrel, and not a Springfield. IHC ?? got a corn binder ?? A little looking and reading, I was real happy with what I got for the money. ( after a little education ) Hope they get plenty of parts with these, or part out some of the bad ones. Sure would be fun to get a receiver and build one up in 308 to go with the IHC. Any money spent with the DCM or CMP has been well spent so far.

I wonder if the Philippines have any M2 Ball to go with the rifles?
Nice to have something to look forward to.
It's here! Nice looking unfinished stock. Impressive trigger and clean new barrel. Just need to grease her up and hit the range.
46gr of Varget showed promise in my bolt guns and should be nice and easy on the old Garand gas system.
Range report coming soon!

You did well, sir.
Thanks for posting the pic!
That's a fine looking stock, was it listed as coming with an unfinished stock? Are you sure it's not BLO (boiled linseed oil)? That's what they use/d on those rifles.
I'd highly suggest getting a Schuster plug, I put one in each of my Garand's. http://www.schustermfg.com/ That way you can shoot any 30-06 and not hurt the op-rod or crack the heel of the receiver if a load has a higher pressure curve then M2 ball. Too high of a curve can bend an op-rod, the bolt slams against the heel of the receiver at the end of it's cycle, cracked heals are not real common but for $35 it's good insurance, it would be a heart break to ruin one. You can also get the Schuster plugs at Midway or Brownells, I use the adjustable plug's.
Be careful what you wish for!
Would love to get another Garand in military dress and a M1A.
2ndAmendmentNut, by those pics, it looks to me like you won the Garand lottery. Really nice. I'm Ga-reen with envy.

Nice! Thanks for sharing the pics! Looks super & also appears to not be to bad on accuracy either.
I am curious though, at the cost you ended up spending for your piece. That was one of the things that made me hesitate to get involved. Cost & buying sight unseen/handled("pig in a poke", or "mail order bride"/ "blind date" deal).
I'd appreciate, if nothing else, a "ballpark" figure if ya will.
Thanks!
The CMP Special Field Grade are $830 shipped. I got a Special before they sold out, for $1030. The difference is the "Field" may have some considerable pitting on the receiver above the stock line.
There's not much luck involved in the condition. They are completely refurbished rifles with new aftermarket wood.
Not sure it was listed as a refurbished Garand with a new stock. It looks and feels unfinished, but then again I am not experiencing with new boiled linseed stocks. Most I have seen have a a pretty heavy coat of wax or varnish. Perhaps I'll just lightly wax the stock with Renaissance Wax.
Do those plugs allow for steady use of commercial 30-06 ammo? For $30 that seems like a pretty good modification.
EDIT: After a little research it would seem that the stock does have a linseed oil finish.
