    Plans for waste oil burner?

Around 8 years ago, I used to manufacture ornamental concrete products such as waterfountains, concrete pots, benches, tables, etc and I used to use waste oil collected from various places as mold release for my aluminum molds.

Eight years ago, I was STUCK with 8-55 gallon drums and I just don't want to dump the oil because of environmental issues. I've been surfing the net looking for a complete set of plans with drawings, dimensions, etc on how to build a waste oil burner to smelt lead.

Does anyone in "boolit land" use such a setup and/or have a set of plans on all the how to etc?

    Largecaliberman,

The link will take you to a waste oil burner for heating. You may be able to adjust the design for your purposes.

the problem I see is that in an open air type of use the smoke would be a big problem in a heater you have a reburn so you dont get that much smoke but some odor. A guy i knew had one to melt transmissons but it was sealed and tha AL was poured after the heat was turned off shotman

Have a look at "Roger Sander's Waste Oil Heater" from Mother Earth News. I bookmarked this one recently.

edit: Sorry this is a dupe.

I used to sell to a lot of auto repair shops, a lot of the guys had factory made ones. One guy had an old wood burner, which I think was itself converted from a big ol' oil burner... he burned wood, but ran a copper line from a 55 gallon drum of waste oil, which dripped at a steady pace into the burning mix.... seemed to work well for him.

Just dump it in the ocean!

Just kidding. The oil drip woodburning types work well for stoves, but they do need wood to at least get started. Regarding the smoke and odor, you should be able to minimize that if you can get it to burn hot. Think about pressurizing the fuel source, maybe like those white gas Coleman stoves.

Maybe use a small fuel injector to get a nice mist, through a vented pipe similar to a blowtorch tip? That should produce a nice hot flame, plenty for smelting, maybe enough for a forge. An automotive fuel injector from the junkyard should work, although you might have to thin the oil.

Also, you could consider adding some more volatile fuel to the oil to get it to burn well. Gasoline, diesel, etc., maybe alcohol? Now you have an excuse to build a still! It only takes a small amount of gasoline mixed with motor oil to get it to ignite and burn easily; I use this mixture in a spray bottle to aid in starting the wood stove on cold mornings. Dad burns lots of used oil in a burner in the shop every winter

He gets a lot of it from a local truck repair shop for free

He lets the oil sit in 55 gallon barrels at least 6 months
Then he pumps the top 75 - 80 % of the oil off and runs it through a filter

That oil almost looks like new and will not clog the orifice on the oil burner

    The remaing oil is nasty
So he takes it to the rest back to the repair shop for them to recycle

They give him 6-700 gallon of used oil every spring , that way they don't have to pay to have it recycled what he burns
    Just the 20 - 25% he can't use

He found he had to keep cleaning the orifice when he tryed to burn unsettled oil

Since he went to letting the junk settle out
He rairly has to unclog it

We sued to use waste oil to heat trashcan for washing mess kits in the field and sterilizing eqpt.
They were home made drip burners but to get them burning clean without a lot of smoke and smell, they used a heavier splash plate, and then dripped water on the plate after it got good and hot. flashing to steam in teh middle of an oil flame it atomized the oil and gave a very clean burn.
I don't have a picture or plans for one but they are in the olf FM on field sanitation. Should eb able to find one somewhere on the net.

That's a pretty slick idea Sam! Vaporizing water to make the oil burn cleaner. Filing that one away in memory. I might have to try that in my stove.

    Waste oil burners

Years ago Stewart-Warner made low pressure oil burners. These burners would even burn Coke or Pepsi( the sugar kind, back when they used sugar instead of corn syrup). I used to know of about 6 old "service stations"that had S&W's running on 50/50,#2 fuel and waste oil. I also know an old service tech(89 at last count) that heats his house on 50/50 and has 3 S&W's for parts if he needs them.

Coleman's surplus still has the waste oil burner conversion kit for GI heaters for $39.95.
