Hello fellow shooters! A friend of mine wants to have a stainless barrel made to shoot his 45-70 at sub sonic velocities.
He is not sure of the twist rate that would best suit this project. I suggested around 1:12"
The barrel maker cuts his rifling with a single point cutter, so he can tailor make the rifling/ number of grooves etc. to his request.
What depth is the rifling typically for a 45-70govt? Does the cast bullet gunsmith cut a different dimension to the rifling for a cast bullet rifle?
-His wants his barrel to be 18.5" long.
-His target velocity is around 1050fps.
-The longest and heaviest Bullet he wants to shoot is a flat nosed postell that is 1.370" long, and 550 grains.
The rifle/platform he may use is a Lee Enfield, with a modified magazine. Another gunsmith has made lots of them like that, but my buddy wants to get the barrel specifically built for cast bullets.
Your input would be greatly appreciated guys!
