Favorite loaded for 45/70 with 1/20 twist

I just bought a Ubeti 1885 with a 32" barrel. I'm looking for some information on bullet moulds. I want a short range plinker mould. I have seen some Accurate molds that look like very little of the bullet is sticking out of the case. I'm thinking these might reduce case capacity and make good short range rounds.

My range has a 600 yd max. I know that may be pushing it with the 1/20 twist. Just wondering if any one is having any luck with the uberti at 600. If you are what mould are you using?

These are made one at a time and Bernie is a good guy give him a call, I have all the 45cal and they shoot good out to a 1000yd if you have the eye for it.

The small mold is for 45acp and 45colt 230gr the 45 70 molds are 440gr Chicken bullet 547gr Silhouette and 545gr NASA.
I'm going to give him a call I for got to get the led zeppelin mould from him.

a "plinker" mould that can be used up to 600 yards? do you expect or want any semblance of accuracy? smokeless or black? greaser or paper patch? full length sizing or fire formed? you'd need to provide lots more details of what you wanna do with that gun and how yer gonna do it.

The Lyman 510 goverment round nose does good if the nose fits the bore close. There has been some ran with smaller noses that dont perform as well. Another good one from lyman is the 535 grn postel, this is a good performer also. I have a Old West 550 grn Shilouette thats a stellar performer but with this weight and full power loads recoil can become an issue depending on rifle weight. In your 1-20 twist the 510 grn or 535 grn should perform well. As to load data start with 1 1/2 F Olde ensforde powder and a .060 wad to the base of the bullet in your brass. 2 tracing paper wads and the bullet seated onto the wads I perfer seating by hand and tensioning the necks lightly after seating. Start out just off the rifling with the bullet. .005-.010 is good. Work up in 3 grn increments adding compression to the charge, compress in a seperate step with a die not the bullets as this force can distort soft noses. A hard wood or aluminum copy of the bullet can be used in the seater die to compress the charge. If the copy is close to the bullet then the die may not even need to be reset for this. Use very little crimp enough to iron out the bell is all thats needed. This is for true Black Powders not the substitutes or smokeless. If possible chronograph the loads and shoot for 1150-1200fps watching the Standard deviation and extreme spread while working up. Cast bullets from softer alloies 20-1 is a good place to start. Use a good lube rated for black Powder. SPG or emmerts improved ( home made) work well.

My post was really two questions. I need a short range 50-200yd bullet mould and I'm interested to hear if anyone is having luck with the uberti 1/20 at 600 yds.

Saeco 645 mould, 480 ish gr. when cast from 20-1. Shoots quite well all the way to 1000 yds, knocks silhouette rams off the rail with ease, and sends chickens to the berm with authority.

My Uberti rifle has the 28" barrel, 1/20 twist and the Pedersoli long range tang sights.

I shot this rifle for over 5 years using a 350 grain LBT mold and the Saeco 300 gr. copy of the old Winchester bullet, for ranges to 200 yards and the Saeco #645 bullet that cast 490 grs. to over 1000 yds in various long range gong matches, BPCR silhouettes and the Quigley match. I was never at a disadvantage to the guys shooting the 535 -550 gr. 45's.

I was also never at a disadvantage when shooting against rifles with the MVA sights or MVA scopes.

I updated my earlier post I'm shooting a 45/70 sharps 1/18 twist 32in barrel with Black powder, The barrel may have been made by the same folks as yours. I was shooting the lighter 440gr bullet out to 300yds it was impressive at that range. I switch to the heaver bullets because I had them and it was windy, for longer ranges. I have the same Uberti highwall and have had good accuracy shooting BP, Pryrodex Select and smokless loads using IMR 3031. The bullets i used were the lee HB 405 and the Lyman 535. Tried the Lee 500 .459 bullet with IMR 3031 but not much success. Will try some other powders with that one as well as BP and see what happens.
