    2015 in the 45-70

I have been shooting my marlin 1895 w/22" barrel for about a year now, I have used imr 4198 the whole time. I use a noe 425grr rnfp boolit. I have been thinking of switching to a slower powder in hopes of getting better accuracy. currently I am shooting at 1400fps, and I like it there. I am goin to try Reloader 7. does anyone have a load for that powder and velocity? does anyone think the slower powder might help accuracy? and anyone that uses tthat powder, whats your opinion on it? thanks,Travis

After trying a lot of different powders in the 45-70, and getting some spectacular results, I can assure you that 4198 is about as good as it gets. I've gotten as good results with Rel7 and 5744. They will all shoot 1moa off a good rest. I'm not sure changing powder will get you as good results as simply trying different bullets. The 45-70 is the easiest caliber I've ever tried to get good groups with. Just about everything shoots great in it. Good luck.

OK, well, right now at 50 yards my groups are at about 4", now I know that's bad, but it is not the gun, mainly it is my eyesight. I wear contacts and they are getting a little old, and also I am having a harder time focusing on the object and the front sight. but I have a 3x scope on the way,(I got it on amazon, brand by the name of Monstrum) and right before deer season I am thrwing these contacts out and putting new ones in so that will help. Also about the mostrum scope, has anyone had any experience with this brand? it was about 70 bucks on amazon, fixed power, 3x, with green/red light up reticle.thanks! Travis

You might give IMR 3031 a try. I've found it to perform well with loads over 1,300 fps.

found burn rate, I,ve heard 3031 is good but dirty, I think I am going to go with acc 2230 but it is spherical, will it still work ok in my lyman 55 measure?

29.5 gr. of AA2015 under a 440 gr RNFP produces just shy of 1250 fps from my Pedersoli RB (30" barrel) and 2 MOA (ironsight) groups at 300M which, pretty much, duplicates my BP load using same boolit.

so what charge do you think it would take to get to 1400 in a 22" barrel? I was going to start at 35.5 with 2230,

I was also thinking about h335, my first thought was 3031 as someone suggested, but I have read a few places that it burns dirty, now h335 is about the same burn rate as 2230 I believe, but first, what bullets are each of you using, mine is the noe PB 460-425rnfp sized to 459.

3031 is my preferred 45-70 powder.

My 440-grainers are from an old Ohaus mold that drops just under .461 from my alloy (2/1 PB/C0WW + 1% Sn). Boolits are pan-lubed with Emmert's and loaded 'as-cast'. I also use this alloy/lube combination for my .38-55s when loading with 4198.

Question: Why do you feel you must have 1400 fps? A properly placed 425-grainer from a .45-70 at 1200 fps will put down any critter that currently walks the North American continent.

You might look a while to do better.....114yds at my own range. Deck to backstop.
Every deer I've shot with the 45-70 has been a complete pass through at any angle...and at around 1400fps.

What powder and boolit produced those groups?

I don't know, mainly for trajectory, I don't want it aany worse than it already is. in reality if I had a chronograph it would probably tell me about 1350, and it is a pleasant load to shoot.i need to get one but if I have that kind of money I have better things to spend it on.
