44 magnum mold question

I bought the following awhile back but I just got around to trying it and resizing them.

Did I buy too large for a 44 magnum? Had thought it was a 432 until I looked closer, but even that was a tad over.

Thats what a custom sizer is made for. Have you slugged your barrel?

I f that mold does indeed drop a boolit at .434" with your alloy, you should be all right. You can size down to .432" and use the boolits in about anything. Would be really good in most lever actions rifles in .44 mag, as they seem need a slightly large boolit at times.

What .44 mag you going to use it in?

Just size to what you need for your barrel. Always better to be a bit over than a bit under!

My 44 molds drop 433-434 and I down size. I want them that way.

But it really depends on your barrel. Slug it.

My NOE mold drops at .436 which is perfect. I have three different lube sizer dies depending on the weapon I'm loading for and if one happens to be a Marlin .44 magnum levergun with microgroove you need a fat bullet.

I have one mold from the first production run of that mold and at that time .434" was the only size. Mine cast just over .434". I Water Drop then size .431". It was hard on the sizer and I broke one of the cross bolts (easy fix) on the sizer after quite a few thousand. It was such an improvement in fit, in my guns, I was happy to do it. I shot at least 10,000 that way before I got a .432" mold.

Air cooled boolits could probably go down .004"+. With a quality mold .001" over is enough to clean up the drive bands.

Ok thanks for the reassurance. The lee mold I started with and the resizer die were for .429 and that drastically shaved lead off the NOE mold design. I'll see if I can pickup a .432 resizer or hone out the existing one. Currently will be loading it for a new S&W 629 classic though I will most likely pickup a lever gun in the same caliber as well.

If you have to, size in steps using smaller sizers each time.

A cheap option is a Lee Sizer kit and single stage press first. then lube and size in your .429/.430

IMO, you want a min of 0.431", check the throat sizes in your cyl.
