Has anyone ever tried the Lyman 457658 spire point type boolit in a 45-70, 45-90? I'm a wondering if they are accurate up to 500 meters or so for Rams etc..

My shooting partner shot it for awhile with good results I believe the lyman mould he was shooting was listed to weigh 480 grns. It did well for him and seemed to move the rams around alot on the chains. Gave a solid ring on impact also.
I'll send you a box of those too if you want to try them.
They get shaky in the wind at long range.
There are many better bullets for your rifle.
They sure do look like they should work good though
Live Free or Die Death is not the worst of all evils
That's ok, I was just wondering if they stabilize. These big slow calibers with black powder sure are different than the smokeless stuff! Sure seams a lot more fun though
bignut,
if it is spire or spitzer point it will do what 45bpcr says.
the reason is that it is travelling in the transonic zone, and that nose shape has hammering shockwaves at those speeds.
mach 1.2 to mach 0.8.
that nose shape works better over mach 1.2, but try getting that as a minimum from a 45/70 out to 500 meters.
keep safe,
bruce.
i think that a compromise bullet nose shape, such as a postell or money, will typically be better at the longer marks than a pointy spire or flat meplat.
BACO 459525-M3 money ...
Bignut, keep things simple while you're learning. The Lyman Postel will work just fine in both cartridges you mention. The Saeco 645 in the 45-70, and should work well in the 45-90, but using a bullet lighter than 500 in those longer cases is just wasting a lot of powder capacity.
Long range rules, the rest drool.
