    RCBS Thermometer

I'm guessing my new thermometer is out of cal , I left it in the mini mag yesterday and was pouring pretty boolitz at 580 degrees .. Even left the full pot alone and stuck the probe on top of the element and walked off for a 20 minit break , come back still at 580 ..

Holland, my RCBS thermometer seems to read a little low, but not as far off as yours. The good news is that it is consistent, so I can adjust my alloy temperature to a previously successful level.
I don't care if it reads in parsecs, if it is the same every time I use it.

From Lymans info, a mini-mag should get up to over 700 degrees.

I've got a mini-mag, but no thermometer; so I don't know how hot that thing gets.

Send it back. RCBS is a good company, I'd be surprised if they didn't make
good on it, assuming no abuse.

Check it against a rolling boil of water , 212 F or barrow a buddy's gauge . Some models can be tweaked by holding the stem boss behind the back of the dial and reseting it by turning the dial housing.

    Mystery Solved !!

I thought abt this Saturday after finishing up , the thermometer comes with a wire loop for attaching to the thermometer and clipping to side of pot .. Apparently it acts as a heat sink and draw some off the thermometer stem ..

I just reheated a half pot that was left in the furnace , was at 705 in twenty minutes or so , unplugged it and cud feel the lead start to solidify around 600-620 which is good , so I spose it's fairly close ..

Moral : dont use the clip to attach to pot ..
