My son missed his chance at a nice buck because he wanted to sleep in and not go hunting this morning. He went with me yesterday and we had a nice one chase a doe right past us at full tilt and didn't get a shot. This morning, I saw a nice buck before legal shooting hours and had to let him go. A bit later, just after legal time, a doe and her two fawns came past. Not long after, the buck showed back up. No second chances, buddy! At 25 yards my suppressed 300 blackout AR15 put a 170Lee FN straight through him. He ran into the brush and I lost sight of him, but it didn't sound like he went far. After a few minutes, I walked the 50 yards to the house, made some coffee and checked out the pics on the game camera. After giving him 45 minutes, I followed the blood not 50 yards after walking right past him, decided the kids needed to get out of bed. This is my first big buck and my first with cast bullets. It's a trophy to me even if its not a record book deer. I had just put my bow up last night, but if I had used it, he may have made Pope & Young.
The bullet may have tumbled after impact but got both lungs. He didn't stand a chance.
