Yesterday I had to go to the historical arms show to poke around. Im at a booth and look down and see an 2 and a half original brown bakelite m16 handguards. These were made for the very first m16 ever produced for field use, the colt 601. They only left the handguards brown on the first 100 rifles then started painting them green. The suspense was killing me waiting for the seller to come back to his table. I got a good deal on them. I guess you still can find some good stuff at gun shows. I didnt think I would ever see a pair of these in person especially at a local show. Heres some pics for the retro AR lovers out there.
