I present thee the result of the 550 swage die set I just bought off of HGS (which came packaged in a plastic hardware organizer and a TON of bubblewrap, by the way)
The 600gr 510-1E is on the left, and this 650gr-1.27S is on the right:
Both are made from RCECO 50cal 1.25" jackets. Using the 50cal jacket with the 550 was tricky at first. I put in approx 550gr of swage lead core (0.445" diameter) and at first used a 0.450" diameter core seat punch to start the lead and jacket to swell out to 0.550". Then, had to unstick the jacket from the punch and then went to a 0.490" diameter core seat to finish it off. Then into the point form it went...
What's not really visible in the photo is a bizarre cross-hatch pattern on the outside surface of the jacket. Clearly, the gilding metal jacket is distressed. I am delighted it didn't burst. I have tried something similar using a 45cal pistol jacket swelled out to 50cal. It had the same cross-hatch pattern and that one did burst, owing to the thinner jacket material.
So if I do much more of these, I'm going to anneal the 50cal jacket so that it will better tolerate swelling out to 0.550"
That is all at this time
