Yes.,Why ooops?.
I dreamed about a Trapdoor Springfield last night..
Never really though about owning one, but it must be in my subconscious mind.
The dream was very vivid and real..

Not sure why Craig61a said "oops", but I can say that the first (and last) time I loaded 5744 with a wad in my Trapdoor, I got a ring in my chamber right at the base of the boolit... Now I'm looking at a new lining for my chamber... Not my favorite day of shooting...
Yes, a wad can do that. Especially when touching the powder. A shame.

The oops was because this ended up getting posted twice.

When you use any kind of wad and press it down on top of the powder it becomes the primary projectile and the bullet becomes a bore obstruction, when the primary projectile/wad hits the base of the bullet/bore obstruction it causes it to expand and ring the chamber right at the bullet base.
Is there a circumstance where a wad and/or filler would be necessary or beneficial with 5744 in the .45-70?
I have shot AA5744 in 38-55, 45-70, and 45-90 with out any fillers or wads.
