    357 sig and quickload

    Evening everyone. I recently found a deal on a glock 23 kkm 357 sig barrel I could not pass up, and am having trouble finding data. I want to use the lee 105. I loaded some lee 120 tc with 7.3 grains of unique (speer plated data) and it seemed like a fun load. I have been researching quickload, and am wondering if that would be a good way to go. I understand you can make custom boolits on the program, and was wondering if anyone has made a lee 105 swc with it, or has used it for 357 sig. The barrel was beautiful by the way. And I will more than likely be trying to use unique or hp38.

    Also feeding was very smooth hand cycling, and dropping the slide on it using 105 swc dummy rounds, as well as not having the extraction issues my glock 30 has with the swc boolits.

    Btw I am not out looking for data per se, just trying to figure out if quickload will be worth it for me. I have heard it does not work as well for straight wall cartridges, but would like to know about 357 sig.

    I don't have a 357 SIG or QuickLoad, so I can't help you with any info. A member here using the handle "dkf" is a big 357 SIG fan. Shoot him a PM & I'm sure he would be glad to offer some suggestions.

    Thanks. Due to the non abundance of 357 sig brass around here, my plan as of now is forming it from 40 and using light loads, seems to head space in my barrel just fine, trying to figure a load right now. Thinking the lee 105 with a start of around 7 grains of unique, then build from there. My goal is to save lead and use a swc bullet, and my 9mm won't feed the lee. Plus a little extra velocity makes the holes cleaner.

    The Lee 105 SWC is already in Quickload so no need to make a custom bullet profile for it.

    Starting to get into the 357 sig game myself. My wife bought me a model 31, and while not initially ecstatic (I was asking for a lever gun) I have since learned to enjoy it. I picked up 500 115gr XTP with the Hornady lock n load promotion and hope to load them over some Longshot and see how they do. It's definitely a hot lil round using the 115-125 gr bullets. I hear you have to use FP bullets for this gun. Not sure if it's myth or not. I'm just getting started with this unique lil round.

    What type of velocities does that 120 grain run at?...

    I was looking at the Lee 105 in QuickLoad and the velocities seem amazing--maybe wrong as QuickLoad is a bit optimistic when it comes to velocities...

    What powder and charge are you planning on using with the Sig? What is the barrel length?

    I'm using the 4 inch barrel. I have some loaded currently in necked down 40 cases (I know, I know, but they are light loads and Boolit fit is tight). 10 loaded with 7 grains of unique and 10 with 7 grains cfe pistol, at about 1.100 iirc.

    7 grains of Unique is showing about 1347 fps @ 28972 psi...

    That seems pretty fast to me, 1250 fps might be a bit more realistic, but I have no idea what the 357 Sig all about. Never looked at ballistics...

    8.0 grains of Unique starts to show a warning color at the psi indicator section--39355 psi...

    QuickLoad has no data on the CFE Pistol yet...

    Thanks for running those numbers for me. I think I will be buying quickload soon as I get my tax return I was going off of data for the 115 grain xtp, and that topped off at 8.0 I believe. The 357 sig is a pretty neat-o cartridge

    Yea, the program is pretty neat—but it has a few quarks. It is definitely optimistic with velocities as I have chronographed some loads and it can very some. But, that certainly depends on the firearm it is used in…

    It takes much patients and keeping the manual open on the screen as you attempt to run through the programs. They are quite massive…

    I do think the 40 necked down to form the Sig might lessen the capacity of the case, so your pressures could be higher than predicted…

    QuickLoad has a place where you measure the case at various locations and it will calculate the capacity. This then adjusts your data to reflect this…

    Hodgdon Annual Manual for 2015 has data for the Sig and CFE pistol…

    The hodgdon manual is where I got the cfe pistol data, and I think I got the unique data from lyman 49th

    While 357 Sig is a bottleneck case I would be cautious w/ Quickload. It has some quirks w/ straight wall cases and the resulting pressures/velocities aren't always right. To the point that I don't really trust it for them. It's scary accurate w/ bottleneck rifle cases if you enter all the information you have. Just be aware of this and as usual don't start at max. If you work up the load properly you will be fine. I wish they would update powders more often and have it so the updates are downloadable online. It is 2015 and a lot of notebooks aren't coming w/ optical drives anymore.

    The 7.2 grains of cfe pistol and lee 105 swc worked well for first trial. I loaded up 45 more to get some more accuracy testing done. the unique worked ok, but seemed less accurate than the cfe pistol offhand. I really like cfe pistol. I don't think setback should be a problem, even with my disadvantaged shorter neck from using 40 brass. Not loading it hot anyways. I just want reliable feeding in an auto with the lee 105 boolit. Never got glock, beretta, m&p, or sccy the reliably eat it.
