Is It Cold Where You Live?

I have lived through winters where the weather has been colder but even at -3° it seems like the cold has been especially harsh & cutting.
Must be a sign of getting old where old people have a harder time regulating their body temperature.
Just out to the barn to start the tractor to move some snow so the neighbor can get to work.

Well always remember it is better to look DOWN at the snow than UP at the lid.

Went to the store the other day when it was around +10 and no wind.

Came out about an hour later and the temp dropped to -4 and the wind was about 30MPH.

Left all of the frozen food in the car till the next day when I could put on warmer clothes.

Funny how age will remind you to be careful.

Boy, it's been 12-15 years since I've been ice fishing.
I'm glad that Algore has fixed globalwarming and there's ice now to fish on.

Did I ever tell the story of the time I went ice fishing and ended up with a minus one fish?
    True story:
I went ice fishing on lake Erie with two other guys Bill & Jim.
After a full day of fishing, Bill had 7 perch & 2 walleye.
Jim had several walleye & some perch, I had -0- zilch, nada.
When we got ready go I was helping Bill load his fish in a sack, when I grabbed up the last walleye he had caught, it came back to life, twisted out of my hands, hit the ice and disappeared into the hole.
I looked at Bill, his eyes blinking with disbelief and he said, "That was my fish, you lost my fish, . . . you owe me a fish . . ."
Not only did I spend a whole day enduring the elements, and caught no fish, I came home with a minus 1 fish.

It's currently 4 degrees out, w/o the wind chill. If I didn't have to go out I wouldn't, but I have a appointment at the dentist in a few hours. I'll stop at the library on the way back and return a couple of books and pick up a dvd that I had requested. Better stop and get gas while I'm out, less than a quarter tank in the truck.

Minus 6 here, not counting wind chill.
You know it's cold when your freezer temperature is higher than the air temp!

We take advantage of the cold weather to thaw out our freezer. We simply load everything into laundry baskets and set them out in our breezeway. Few hours later, when the freezer is all thawed out and dry, we bring every thing back in. WeatherBug says it's -1 F, with a windchill of -15F right now.

It is colder right now than it get's here. 9 degrees without counting the wind. Last winter we hit 0 and it doesn't get that cold here either.

Just who invented Jan/Feb anyway? Algore?

I was born within 50 miles of Fargo North Dakota. I've been east, south and west but something always pulled me back here.

Cold? This year? This morning was -19 and about as cold as it has been, but I don't call one morning of -19 cold, no sir.

3 weeks of -20 in the daytime with -30's at night, yeah, that is getting cold. After a couple of weeks cars don't start, stuff breaks.
It is cumulative, and sometimes the only real cure is to haul it in to where it can be heated up above freezing.

Now I know for many of you this has been a rough year. I feel for you, truly I do.
It is one thing for us up here to deal with it. But we know all the tricks. Like the long underwear that goes on in October and doesn't come off till June!
Most of the time it is light weight cotton + Polyester blend that breaths well. But if the weather is looking like headed for -40 for a month, or if I'm having to work outside then the wool stuff comes out.

Houses up here are insulated, have very GOOD Furnace's, 80% effecient or better. And the smart folks either have a generator, or an alternative heat source.

I had a furnace quit on my after 2 weeks of cold weather, happened around 5 on friday night. So no real access to help or parts till monday morning.
Kitchen stove is natural gas, so I set the oven for 375 and opened the door. Kept us alive and kept the house from freezing up.

Cold is just another obstacle, not much different than a mountain or a river. Be smart, plan ahead, plan for stuff to go wrong.

Young and stupid me, within 10 miles of the Canadian Border, -37 below, it is friday night, I'm out of smokes, truck won't start, and I'm feeling the urge for people. 3 mile walk one way to the edge of town and a bar. Got some smokes, had one light drink, spent an hour talking to people, and walked back. Cold won't kill you if your careful. But you need to have the right tools.
And you have to have a FIRM grip on yourself.
