    data for imr 4831

I sold my 243 over the weekend and made a teenager who was saving money for his 1st rifle and his dad very happy . the dad was even more happy when I sold him all the brass dies and bullets I had for it along with the gun . ive got about 3/4 pound of imr 4831 here and the only gun I used it for was the 243 . the only other rifles I load for is 30 30 win and 35 rem and I usually use varget or pistol powders for them. does anyone have any data for this powder with either of those calibers? weather its just plinking lead bullet load or otherwise . I cant find any in my manuals or online and I hate to waist it with the powder situation the way it is today .if not i'll see if my father inlaw can use it for his 7mm08 I guess

I have an old IMR manual, for the 35 Rem it shows a compressed 43gr load of 4831 under a 200gr j-word yielding 1780fps and only 25,900psi, and also a compressed load of 43.5gr under a 150gr j-word for 1850fps, 21,300psi. The old manual doesn't have any 30-30 loads at all, that's odd. It doesn't appear you could stuff enough 4831 into either cartridge to get yourself in trouble. Although an inefficient burn, I sometimes get some surprising groups out of slow burning powders. Wouldn't recommend them in cold weather unless you use a magnum primer, in fact that might improve the efficiency some in any weather.

Your two cartridges you're interested in using IMR 4831 in need faster burning powder.

You can always find a reloader friend and trade him your 4831 for a faster burning powder that would be suitable .

Many years ago I used 4831 in my .30/30 with great results. I was using about 30 grains of powder with a 170 grain boolit. Expect to see unburned powder in your barrel. I would start at about 30 grains and work up to about 34 grains. Fill a case up to the base of the neck and you should be in the range of 30 grains.

Some time back R5R had a post on using 4831 in the .30/30.
