    Enfield No.4 MK1 markings

I picked up a cheapo to plink away some 303 ammo I have. It's an Enfield No.4 Mk1 and I am always intrigued to understand the markings and history of firearms. I did some homework but it doesn't seem to add up for me.

All of these marks and are on the receiver.
'US Property' which I think indicates USA mfg by Savage.
'B' meaning mfg by Birmingham Small Arms, United Kingdom.
'England' on the top front of the receiver.

There are a lot of other marks and this gun has obvious been around the block a few times. Ultimately it doesn't really matter but I am just curious to know. If anyone wants to add their 0.02 then please chime in.

Is that "B" on the left side of the receiver and is it really a squared off "S?" That would make more sense if the rifle was produced by Savage as a Lend Lease item.

A few photos would help with identification.

The average gun owner goes to the store to buy ammo in a certain caliber because he has a gun at home that shoots it.

It's the true gun nut who goes out and buys a gun in a certain caliber just because he has some ammo at home in that caliber that needs shot!

Here are some pics. My guess is the gun is a hodge podge of reworks and bubba mods (hack saw to the fore grip). I'd like to hear your thoughts though.

The B is in the first pic, lower right under the numbers 3 and 8, poorly stamped.

That`s a No4 Mk1* made by Savage for England in the days of WW 2. It does appear to have been sent thru a re-furbishing and re-build at some time in its life by all the markings not made by Savage. It is probably a 2 groove barrel, most Savage No4`s were, but it shoots very well for what it was intended.Robert
