I am rethinking my powder storage.
I am rethinking my powder storage.
Well, Yes and no.
I did start my post with the question, "How would you store it ?"
So I am well aware that 11.3.7 is about storing powder.
But when cities and counties adopt the international building code or some other code including the NFPA or SAAMI guidelines...you can darn well bet that their interpretation will most likely be that a single residence should not have more than 50lbs of smokeless powder. The penalty if they find you out ? Probably be a warning and a order to remove the excess powder and have the 'legal' amount properly stored which will no doubt involve an inspection by someone like the local fire marshal.

like the guys that buy a home in an HOA and put up a flag then have national news show up for the latest "Veteran told to take down flag" story, know the ordinances in a place before you buy a home there.

But the HOA boards can change their rules with basically no accountability. They might have had rules that you did not disagree with when you bought your house, but then it became infected with a bunch of people who had no success in their professional lives, so they used their HOA power to abuse other people.
US DOT classifies smokeless powder as a class 4 "flammable solid", and primers are class 1.3 -1.4 "explosive"

There is a local retailer that keeps his powder supply in a non working chest freezer. I asked him about that, the fire dept. said to store it that way.
Don't think it's a bad way to store powder because of the insulation.
I would consider that a decent start, if I were under 30...
Once upon a time - about 21 years back I bought an order of 7 100lb kegs, 4 were sold off upon arrival to close friends and businesses which I worked with. I needed to go over 500lbs to get the next level of pricing discount so for those 4 kegs I let go at cost. But even then it was saving me nearly $3/lb on MY powder.
If you can remember the insanity that was going on back then, then you might agree such a buy was very prudent. I would have loved to buy more at the time, but my liquidity was stretched thin trying to hoard up all the goodies I might need after the Congressional Apocalypse.
BTW - I have maybe half an 8lb kegs worth left.
I would describe it as 700,000 grains.
Interesting read so far, personally, I shoot a lot of pistol, I shoot a lot of rifle, I shoot a whole bunch of shotgun... You start spreading 100 pounds over the three of them and the multiple calibers of each and 100 pounds doesn't seem like much... that and I'm glad that I live where there are not a lot of people poking into your business. Of course on the down side if we ever had a fire the first thing I'd be looking for is a stick for the hot dogs, and I hope I have a bunch of them cause by time the fire dept gets here, that is if they get here the day of the fire, that's all that we'll be doing is eating and drinking the beer before it get's warm!!!
i think the words just a little more sums it all up
Am I in trouble if I have over 100 lbs? Or just hated???
If I had 100lbs I would need at least another 100lbs, but I wouldn't be in a real big hurry to get it. I would fill an couple of other needs first, and wait for a good deal on powder.
Looking at retirement in the near future, 100 lbs of powder would just look GREAT.

If i only had a hundred pounds of powder
i would be out of powder in short order
8# only loads about 200 .50 BMG = 2500 rounds per hundred pounds
the M2HB machine gun unloads ammo at 550 rpm so that is about 5 minutes shooting time not counting loading the belts

gee and to think i'd love to be able to try out every kind of powder - there's currently over 117 kinds ( not counting some old surplus/discontinued stuff that still pops up now and then ) sadly there's no way i could afford to try 100 let alone 117 .... sounds good tho ! with my luck if i stumbled upon a 100 pounds of powder it'd be powdered eggs
