    Nice hammer. However, I always use short pieces of Hickory, recovered from broken sledge hammer handles. Last handle I broke, I got about 3 pieces from. I am still using the first. I cut them about 12" long, and use it just like a hammer to open the sprue.

    Save some effort, don't split the tee. Leave it as part of the finished hammer. Anneal it first so that it mushrooms with the lead.

    I made one using 2 inch aluminum pipe as the case, a steel pipe handle. It works wonders.
